Company History

In April 2002, company founder Jack Spielberg launched Wasabi Wireless based on the success of NTTDoCoMo in Japan and NTTDoCoMo's subsequent $9.8 billion dollar investment in AT&T Wireless aiming to bring a version of DoCoMo to the United States by 2002-2003. All major U.S. carriers have followed, preparing to launch 2G and 3G wireless information services to repeat NTTDocoMo's success.

Wasabi Wireless provides an elite wireless entertainment information service including a high end Japanese food and entertainment guide, digital coupons for specials and discounts (delivered by cell phone), games and contests as well as our Get Opinions feature where cell phone users locate other cellular instant message users discussing their same Japanese topic of interest to obtain outside opinions on our recommendations.

The origin of Wasabi Wireless stems from the popularity of Spielberg's Japanese community portal, www.nycjapan.com which provided a comprehensive web community resource for Japanese professionals, families and exchange students living in the United States, American enthusiasts of Japanese culture (ex. sushi lovers, professionals who have worked abroad, past travelers to Japan, past military tour, etc.) to help them find Japanese products, services, culture, people, food, music, movies, events and entertainment in New York.

Over 60,000 people signed up for membership, highlighing the web site's tremendous value to Japanophiles as a resource and often citing that nothing like it exists on the Internet. Although the web site remained a community resource, and not a dotcom play, it did succeed in amassing valuable marketing information from its membership about what U.S. "Japanophiles" want in an information service.

With recent massive investment in wireless information services in the U.S. by all the major cellular carriers where NTTDoCoMo proved that a low cost subscription information service can generate billions in revenue, Wasabi Wireless transfered its knowledge base into a wireless offering, releasing our Wasabi Guide V1.0 in Q4 2002 and our 3G Wasabi Guide in early 2003.
